Fall Capsule Wardrobe — 15 Basics You Need in Your Closet
Fall weather is finally here! We all have seasonal basics that we wear on repeat and our closets couldn’t live without. I put this list together of my fall essentials — my capsule includes 15 items that can be combined into endless outfit options. Just about everything on the list is neutral, meaning each item can be paired with pretty much any other piece on the list. I don’t necessarily actually live by the capsule wardrobe lifestyle and have other items in my closet, but these are the pieces I wear non-stop and are must-haves in every woman’s closet for fall. Plus, just add some coats and warm accessories and you could take this capsule right into winter!
The 15 Items
Black Denim | Everyone should own a good pair of black jeans. I wear a lot of denim in the fall and a solid black pair is perfect to dress up or down. I love this pair with the button front and subtle distressing at the hem.
Chambray Shirt | I’m guilty of owning multiple chambray shirts and am constantly wearing them. Trust me, you need one. It can be worn SO many different ways — unbuttoned over a tee with leggings, tied around your waist, buttoned up under a cardigan… the list goes on. You can wear it with literally everything on this list and I promise you’ll see me wearing it so many different ways this fall.
Classic Sneakers | I’m a sneaker girl through and through. I’ll choose to wear sneakers nine times out of 10 — with everything from dresses to jeans to leggings. I love this classic Nike in black and white & have had them on my wishlist since the Nordstrom sale.
Denim Jacket | Similar to my feelings about the chambray shirt, a good denim jacket is a must for your fall closet. It’s a necessity for layering. Looks cute tied around your waist during the day while it’s warmer, and makes the perfect extra layer once it gets chilly at night. I ordered a tall and sized up in this one for a boyfriend fit.
Plaid Scarf | You could go for a bolder plaid here if you wear more color than me. Since I live for neutrals, I picked this one and its the perfect accessory for fall. A good scarf is great for adding a little something extra to a basic look.
Black High Waist Leggings | My absolute favorite pair of leggings to dress up or down. They’re called the Live In Legging for a reason - so comfy, suck you in in all the right places, go with everything and are long enough for my fellow tall girls. I wear leggings just about every day of the week (but, seriously. I’m wearing them right now as I type up this blog post) and this pair never fails.
Turtleneck Sweater | Sweaters like this are the reason I love sweater season. This one is so cozy & soft, and I love this neutral color for fall. You’ll wear it with everything from jeans or black jeans and booties to leggings and sneakers for a cute athleisure look.
Madewell Gemma Mule | This pair of mules is at the very top of my wish list. They’re so classic, easy and a gorgeous color. You could substitute any flat or mule but I listed this specific pair because I’ve searched high and low and just haven’t found anything I like near as much.
Tan Booties | The most versatile boot for fall. They can be dressed up or down and I love the low heel height on this pair.
Striped Tee | I love a good black and white striped tee. You need one or two in your closet to layer under everything… sweaters, cardigans, chambray shirts, sweatshirts, jackets. Again, you can wear this tee with every single item on this list.
White Tee | Because you can never go wrong with jeans and a white tee. Add a sweater or jacket and scarf and you’re set.
Aerie City Sweatshirt | You all have heard me rave about this sweatshirt over and over. I have an embarrassing amount of colors and a few different styles as they’ve changed from season to season. I am not exaggerating when I say I live in this sweatshirt. I throw one of these on at some point every single day and they’re so affordable, your closet needs one… or five.
And that’s my list! Like I said before, there are so many different ways to combine these 15 pieces for endless looks. If you all are interested, I’ll share some of the ways I’d style these pieces on Instagram stories soon!
I included accessories like shoes, the tote bag and a scarf on this list but you obviously can’t forget classic, every day pieces of jewelry! I’m such an advocate for simplicity and all of my pieces in the PS46 shop are perfect to pair with a capsule wardrobe. Just pick your favorite necklaces and bracelets & you’ll never have to take them off — they go with everything. You can also layer necklaces or stack bracelets for different looks. I linked some of my favorites below!
